Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between prompt injection and jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is getting a model to bypass its own safety training, usually by the person talking to it. Prompt injection is getting it to follow instructions from a third party — most dangerously from content it processes on someone else’s behalf.
Can prompt injection be fixed completely?
Not at the model layer, because instructions and data arrive as the same text with no reliable separator. It is contained by limiting what the model is permitted to do, so that a successful injection has nothing valuable to reach.
Is indirect prompt injection really more dangerous?
Usually yes. The hostile text arrives inside content the system handles for a legitimate user, so the model acts with that user’s permissions on an attacker’s instructions — and no one involved typed anything suspicious.
Do input filters help at all?
They stop opportunistic attempts cheaply and are worth having. They do not stop a motivated attacker, because the ways to phrase an instruction are unbounded. Treat them as defence in depth, never as the boundary.
What is the single strongest structural control?
Separating the component that reads untrusted content from the one that can act. If the reader only emits a typed proposal that a validator approves, a successful injection has nowhere to go.
Does this only affect agents with tools?
No. A summariser rendering output as HTML, or a classifier whose result selects a query, is acting on untrusted text too. Ask what the worst instruction in that text could cause.
