Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to RAG in 2026?
The best alternative depends on your data type. For static documentation under 1M tokens, Cache-Augmented Generation (CAG) with prompt caching is best. For structured business metrics, Text-to-SQL tool calling is superior. For deep relational queries, GraphRAG outperforms standard RAG.
Is RAG dead in 2026?
Naive vector RAG (chunking text and cosine similarity search) is largely obsolete for simple use cases. However, retrieval as a general concept remains essential for massive, dynamic datasets that cannot fit in model prompts.
Can long context windows completely replace RAG?
Not for every workload. While long-context windows eliminate chunking for corpuses under a few million tokens, massive enterprise datasets still incur prohibitive latency, high costs, and attention degradation (the needle-in-a-haystack problem) if dumped raw into prompts.
What is Cache-Augmented Generation (CAG)?
CAG loads an entire corpus into the LLM context once and preserves the pre-computed Key-Value (KV) cache across requests. Subsequent queries execute with near-zero time-to-first-token and dramatically lower API costs.
When should you NOT use RAG?
Do not use RAG for structured arithmetic queries (e.g. quarterly sales totals), small datasets that fit into a cached prompt, exact string searches (like serial numbers), or real-time transactional status checks.
How does MCP compare to RAG?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides standardized tool calling to fetch live data from APIs, databases, and local files at query time, whereas RAG relies on pre-embedded static vector chunks.
