Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a master’s degree to work in AI?
For research roles, effectively yes. For AI engineering — building systems that use models — no. That is the larger and faster-growing market, and it hires on demonstrated capability.
What replaces a degree in an application?
A system someone can actually look at, with numbers attached: what you measured, what you changed, what moved. Evidence that specific outranks a credential because it answers the question the credential only proxies.
Should I learn to train models?
Not as a priority. Most AI engineering work is retrieval, evaluation, tool integration, cost and reliability. Training knowledge is interesting and rarely used day to day.
Which background converts most easily?
Software, data or platform engineering. You already have production judgement, which is the slow half to learn; the AI-specific layer on top is a matter of months of focused work.
Are there situations where the degree genuinely matters?
Yes — some large employers screen on it regardless of role, some skilled visa routes award points for it, and some regulated sectors require it. All are knowable in advance and usually routed around by referrals or smaller employers.
Should I explain the missing degree in my application?
No. Opening by explaining its absence makes it the subject. Opening with a measured result makes the work the subject, and the reader follows whichever you put first.
